A Family’s Perspective: Donna’s Story
Our mom, Donna Peevers, spent 88 years living an amazing life story and while no one in our family wanted to see that story end, we were so very grateful that it could happen in a place of such peace and comfort with her family surrounding her.
​
​​​​​​​​​​​​Mom, who passed away at Huron Shores Hospice in February, was a woman of great compassion and caring, so for her to be able to spend her final days in such a warm and welcoming setting was incredibly meaningful to us all. Mom was so much more peaceful when she moved there from hospital and when she arrived, she asked if she was ‘home.’​

When we were growing up, Mom did everything in her power to build a happy home and Saturday and Sunday night dinners were always a highlight of our weekly routine. Mom worked hard to make it special with candlelight, good food and good music. We were so fortunate to be able to spend time with her over the last days of her life in such a peaceful and comfortable environment. Our whole family had dinner in her room the night before she passed, and it meant everything for us to have one last meal with her.
Mom taught her kids and grandkids many things but perhaps most importantly, through her actions, she showed us that it’s the little things in life that bring us joy and taking pleasure in those things is the secret to happiness.
The staff and volunteers at Huron Shores Hospice were amazingly kind, and we are forever grateful for the opportunity to be with her when she passed and to say goodbye to her in a way that respected her dignity and humanity.

​"The hospice offered a more home like environment, where Mom could see her family and friends (including the furry ones) comfortably any time of day. And when a family member wasn't able to be there with her, the volunteers often sat with her to keep her company, which was so thoughtful. I was also touched by the emotional support they gave to me as well. Both before and after Mom passed. I wasn't expecting that. And even now months later I find myself tearing up remembering, it meant more than I can possibly put into words."
